Closet Organization 101
One of the main causes of stress people feel when they look in their closet is that their clothes don’t have a proper flow; a wardrobe feng sui, so to speak. The goal is to be able to open the doors to your closet and be able to visualize the outfit before you even begin to pull anything out. This requires some planning and strategy. Put the work into your wardrobe so your wardrobe can go to work for you. Every. Single. Day.
Step one is always the hardest. We develop such an emotional connection to our clothes. Some may be given to us as gifts, others worn on special occasions and some linger as reminders or “goals” of a size we used to be. That’s right, it’s the dreaded closet purge. You can’t look ahead to the future without letting go of the past. This process does not have to be a difficult one. In fact, it should be met with empathy but also a healthy dose of realism.
Post purge we move into organize mode. What pieces are better folded or hung up? What is the best way to fold pants, sweaters, or even tees? Finding the perfect way to organize your clothes will create a visual inventory. It will also help create more space for the pieces you will want to add in the future!
It is best to work with the space you have allotted in the beginning. Closets are finite spaces, therefore limiting the amount of pieces we can hang onto and have within our grasp. If needed, we can also discuss other storage options such as wardrobes, shelving, and chests to maximize your closets capacity. Storage is also a great way to ensure you can properly switch your wardrobes between spring/summer and fall/winter seasons.
